Therapy for Therapists and

Helping Professionals

What is a "good" therapist for therapists?

As I mentioned above, working through the challenges of our field in light of the personal challenges we face in life is so important. There are a number of important things to consider in finding a therapist for therapists and other service professionals.

The first is finding a trauma-informed therapist. To be a therapist (or medical professional or other "helping" professional) is to be exposed to small-t traumas over and over again. It is so important work with someone who understands the cumulative effect of this and who can help you process the effects of working with difficult cases or clients, and can help understand how your life experiences impact you personally and as a therapist or professional.

The second is finding a good fit for you personally. Someone who is working with you as an individual, rather than as a colleague. It is easy to get side-tracked talking about intellectual matters rather than "doing" the therapy. Someone who you feel understood and supported by personally rather than just professionally.

The third is finding someone who can model for you and with you the kind of therapist or professional you want to be. This can include a model of therapy, such as EMDR, IFS, integrative therapy, but also an understanding of the important healing dynamics of the therapeutic relationship. You want to feel with them the way you want your clients to feel with you: fully attended to, supported and cared about, and able to repair any relational breaches.
